Effective August 31, 2010 registration for Transisiton, AA Baseball and AAA Baseball Ages 9-12 is closed.
Softball is still inviting registrations for all levels below Majors.
However, we recommend that if your child is interested in playing at one of those levels this fall that you still register, but do not pay at this time.
You will be notified by McLean Little League if an opening occurs and at that time, if you still want your child to play, you can pay by check.

As a follow-up to our earlier email regarding senior (13-16) softball, we have had enough expression of interest that we will have a fall team.
We are also pleased to advise that the manager for that team, Susan Flynn, is a former varsity softball coach at Bishop Ireton High School.
Room is still available on that team for a couple of players, so if you have an interest, please contact Jonathan Wiener by email at
.

| | | | posted 08/12/2010 Registration, Clinics. More Clinics, Pitching, and More Pitching
We hope that you have been enjoying your summer and also now have begun to think about the beginning of the Fall Softball season. Our registration for the fall is already up from last fall, but for those that have not yet registered, late registration is still possible, but please do so right away, to allow us to get your child on a team and to make sure that we are creating the right number of teams to accommodate our players. Especially once teams are created (planned to be done before the end of August), it can become difficult to accommodate late registrants as teams become full up.
We also wanted to let everyone know that this fall, STARTING TUESDAY, AUGUST 24, we are planning to hold various clinics for our fall softball players. Please note that parents are encouraged to participate in the clinics. Also, all Majors, AAA, and AA Softball Coaches and volunteers: We will need all of you to help for these clinics, including pre-season, and will be in touch with you separately to schedule.
General Skills Clinics: [There is no additional charge for these general skills clinics which are available to players registered for fall softball (no extra general clinic registration is required), as follows:]
For all players LL age (as of Dec 31, 2010) nine years old and up, plus younger players with at least one year’s experience in MLL transition softball or similar level of playing experience.
Tuesday, August 24 from 7:15 to 8:45
Thursday, August 26 from 7:15 to 8:45
Tuesday, August 31 from 7:15 to 8:45
Thursday, September 2 from 7:15 to 8:45
For AA and AAA players only:
Tuesday, September 7 from 5:45 to 7:15 (for AA) or from 7:30 to 9:00 (For AAA), though players with conflicts can attend the alternative session.
Sunday, September 12, TBD
PLEASE plan to arrive at least 10 minutes PRIOR to the scheduled clinic start time.
ALSO, while we are hoping that all of our fall ball players will be able to attend as many of the clinics as possible, we also understand that many families will be getting their last bit of summer vacation in before Labor Day. So, if you are out of town for some of the clinics, not to worry, but please attend those that you are able. We have found these clinics to be very helpful to players, parents and coaches alike. If you are in town, we hope you take advantage of these opportunities.
Pitching Clinics:
We have arranged with Anna Baumgartner to hold nine pitching clinics on Sunday afternoons plus one pitching clinic on a Wednesday evening (total of 10 scheduled clinics). Anna is a former college softball pitcher. She was a pitching coach for a majors’ softball team for 3 years and has been the individual pitching coach for several McLean Little League players, including 3 pitchers on the state championship team from two years ago.
These pitching clinics are available for the total cost of $50 (note, no make up sessions/refunds will be provided unless more than two clinics are cancelled for weather.) There will be 2 or 3 time slots (depending upon signup response) which will run for about 45 minutes per slot (to participate in the clinic, players must supply their own catchers—usually a parent). We strongly encourage all players interested in becoming or improving their pitching to participate in these pitching clinics and to practice their pitching on a daily basis.
The pitching clinic schedule is as follows:
Sunday, August 29 on Field 4 with sessions at 4:30 or 5:15;
Wednesday, September 1 on Field 1 with sessions at 7 pm and 7:45 pm (times are tentative, depending on whether we have 2 or 3 sessions)
Sundays, September 5, 12, 19, 26 and October 3, 10, 17 and 24 on Field 4 with sessions at 4:30 or 5:15
Registration, first come first served, will be by email back to Bill Goodman at Email:
, with payments made directly to Anna at the first session. If you have a time constraint that limits your ability to attend a particular time slot, please indicate that in your email. We will attempt to try to even out the numbers to approximately 10-12 players per session, but if players have conflicts at particular times, they are welcome to attend at another time. If we get enough sign ups for a third session, we will open a third session at 3:45.
Pitching logs:
To encourage our pitchers to spend more time practicing their pitching, we also wanted to let you know that we are initiating a pitching log program. Players will receive a snack bar certificate for ice cream for reaching the following pitching practice goals(note, does not include game time or game warm-ups, but would include pitching clinic participation) for each of the following 3 periods: 5 hours logged for period Aug 29 though Sept 11; 71/2 hours for each of Sept 12 through Oct 2, and October 3 through October 23.
We anticipate that pitching log forms will be available to be downloaded from the MLL website soon. Completed forms should be emailed to Jonathan Wiener at
and to your child’s manager.
Questions regarding the above referenced clinics should be directed to Bill Goodman, who has volunteered to organize these clinics this fall. His email address is
.
More general questions regarding fall ball registration should be directed to Jonathan Wiener at
We look forward to a great fall season.

| | | | posted 08/05/2010 Dear Softball Families:
As many of you know, last year we suspended our softball seniors program. This decision followed two years of decline in which we failed to have enough interested players to make a viable program.
Among the factors that contributed to this decline were restrictions placed on our program that prevented the participation of players outside of McLean area boundaries in all stars and which restricted the ability of those participating in all stars to play for travel teams during the all star period, which led to a decision of a group of players, both those deemed ineligible and many of their friends to leave the league. Changes in LL age calculations, meaning that many potential players were already in high school by the time they hit LL age 14, and often had conflicts with varsity and JV softball further reduced our ranks. Of course, not every MLL player is interested in all stars or high school ball, but without such players and the natural attrition as players focus on other activities left us without a sufficient number of players to make a viable league.
We now have been allowed to expand our softball boundaries (and associated all star eligibility) to cover substantial portions of Falls Church and North Arlington A map showing our new softball boundaries will be available soon on the MLL website. We are hopeful that this and other changes will help to create interest among older players in staying with or returning to the league. We are therefore sending out this inquiry to our rising 13 year olds and alumnae players (and those who may be willing to manage or co-manage) who would be LL age 16 or less in the coming spring to gauge the level of interest in so doing.
The program that we have in mind would have the following parameters:
Focusing first on the spring;
1. Enough players to form at least 3 teams (hopefully growing to 4), who would also play one or two teams from Great Falls.
2. Prior to approximately May 15 (around when high school softball ends) the focus would be on skills training and scrimmages for those players not involved in high school ball or travel.
3. Starting around May 15, teams would play doubleheaders (total time, approx 3 hours) once or occasionally twice a week. Weekend games would likely be played on Sunday evenings to avoid travel conflicts.
4. Prior to May 15 and possibly throughout the season, practices would be held on a combined team basis, focusing on skill development. Players involved on other teams would be excused from practice.
5. We would field at least one all star team.
As for the fall, if we felt we had a sufficient level of interest to create a spring team, we would have a fall program, probably a single team (albeit more if there were greater interest) that would be focused on player development and that would play a non-LL, likely weekend doubleheader schedule.
To move forward on this, please let us know, if possible by August 15 (though later expressions of interest will still be welcome), whether your daughter(s) would be interested in participating in such a re-started program and if you would be interested in managing or co-managing a team. If you know of other families who might be interested and who might not have received this email (among other things, our contact information for alumnae players may be dated), please let them know.
Please direct expressions of interest/ questions to Jonathan Wiener

Click here for the Brick Order Form [PDF]
Looking for a way to recognize your child's manager, coaches, team parent or your child, especially one that is playing his or her last year in McLean Little League. We would like to suggest a brick that will be engraved and installed along our "Walk of Fame", adjacent to the clubhouse.
Each brick costs $100, but since McLean Little League is a 501(c)(3) organization, it is tax deductible. If you order a brick(s) before the end of the season, June 19th, we guarantee that your brick(s) will be a part of the "Walk of Fame" by the start of Fall Ball in early September. We recommend that if you have more than one person that you wish to recognize, then purchase a personalized brick for each.
