Softball Winter Pitching Clinic 2022

McLean Little League is once again sponsoring a winter softball pitching clinic for girls. Sabrina Moore, who has been leading the MLL clinic for many years, and her colleagues will hold 40-minute sessions for girls of all ages and experience, on Sundays from January through mid-March.

Registration and Cost: The cost per girl for the winter session is $200. (Additional siblings are ½ price; See note below.) Register and pay through the MLL web site, www.mcleanll.com -- click on “Register Now” and then select the Softball Winter Pitching Clinic. The clinic will be available for the first 40 players to register; after that, additional registrants will be placed on a wait list.

Location: The winter clinic sessions will be held outdoors on the artificial turf field at Westgate Elementary School, 7500 Magarity Road, Falls Church, VA 22043 in January and February and at another venue to be determined in March. It is possible that some sessions will move to other venues in the event of inclement weather or other conflicts.

Dates: Clinics will be held on 10 consecutive Sundays starting January 23 and ending March 27. Unless more than two sessions are cancelled due to weather there will be no makeup date; if needed a makeup date will be scheduled at a later date toward the end of the clinic dates.

Times: The times for the winter clinic sessions each Sunday are as follows:
8:00-8:45
8:45-9:30
9:30-10:15
10:15-11:00

Selecting your time slot: Once you register and pay through www.mcleanll.com, you will receive a confirmation email that will include a link to the Signup Genius that you’ll use to select your time slot.

To the extent possible, please sign up for sessions based on age and relative level of experience; i.e. the earliest sessions will typically be for high school players; and the last session will typically be for the younger players. With all sessions, however, we will allow flexibility to meet participants’ schedule requirements, and participants may attend the clinic at different times to avoid particular conflicts that may arise, provided there is space.

Catchers: Pitchers must supply their own catchers, generally a parent. Parents may wish to bring a bucket or chair to sit on. If a non-adult (such as a sibling) is catching, the non-adult must wear face protection such as a catcher's mask. If a sibling will be the catcher, the parent will need to wait outside to minimize headcount.

Note on sibling discount: The system will likely not give the full discount at registration. MLL will issue refunds for the difference as needed.

Spring 2022 Baseball

The baseball program program is open to boy and girls and includes multiple levels catering to different age and skill levels.

Intermediate level baseball is only open to players of league age 13 and is played on a larger diamond with 50-ft pitching distance and 70-ft bases, often written as 50/70. For comparison, Majors and AAA baseball are played on a 46/60 diamond.

Majors is the highest level of play offered by Little League and is typically open to ages 10-12. (Players of league age 12 must register for Majors, although a limited number of waivers are possible for 12 year-olds that prefer to play AAA.) The minor league levels AAA and AA are competitive levels of baseball geared toward players in the age ranges, respectively, 9-11 and 8-10 with mandatory play rules that balance playing time and at-bats among all on the team. Players at the Majors, AAA, and AA levels must be drafted onto a team.

The Single-A and Transition levels are considered "developmental". Score and standings are not kept, and these are the levels where player pitching are introduced. The league will consider requests for specific managers and specific teammates at the Single-A and Transition levels. Players in Single-A are typically league aged 8-9, and players in Transition are typically league aged 7-8.

What level to sign up for?

  1. In general, please sign up for the next level above based on what your child played last Spring (i.e. AAA in Spring 2021, then register for Majors in Spring 2022). To be clear, there are no guarantees that your player will move up a level (unless age based) as these teams are formed via a DRAFT.
  2. All LL12s are guaranteed a spot on a Majors team, all LL11s are guaranteed a spot on a AAA team, and all LL10s are guaranteed a spot on a AA team.
  3. Little league age calculator for Spring 2022 available here:  https://www.littleleague.org/downloads/2022-baseball-age-chart/

Evaluations

  1. All players trying out for AA, AAA, Majors teams will be required to do a player evaluation (if not a returner on a Majors team).
  2. Evaluation times will be set by Baseball VPs in mid-January 2022 and evaluations will commence in February 2022

LL12s – What you need to know

  1. All LL12s will need to register for Majors and do an evaluation at that level.
  2. Each year, a few LL12s are allowed to OPT OUT of Majors and play AAA – this will be determined post evaluations in February 2022.
  3. If a LL12 ops out to AAA, they WILL NOT be able to pitch in AAA.

Majors – Playing time rules

  1. In the Spring, Majors baseball is the highest level of competition at MLL.
  2. Minimum playing time is 1 AT BAT and 2 innings in the field. Team only bats 9 players at any point in time during the game.
  3. What does that mean? With a team of 12, 6 players will be paired with a teammate and effectively split time in the game between the field and batting.

AAA & AA – Playing time rules

  1. All players at game are in batting order and no one sits out twice before everyone sits out once.
  2. AA only – Player pitch but coach comes in after ball 4 rather than batter walking.

If you have any questions about AA, AAA, or Majors, please contact the Baseball VPs, Navid Lotfi ([email protected]) or Todd Overman ([email protected]).

If you have any questions about A or Transition, please contact the Developmental Baseball & Softball VP, Allen King ([email protected]).

For general registration questions or technical questions about the registration website, please contact the MLL registration coordinator, David Fiske ([email protected]).

Spring 2022 Developmental Baseball and Softball

The T-Ball and Rookie divisions are coed division for new baseball and softball players, typically aged 5-7. These are introductory levels in which players will learn the most basic elements of the game. In T-Ball, all players will hit from a tee. In Rookie, players will be given a small number of short-distance coach pitches to hit and will be offered the tee to complete their at-bat if they cannot hit the pitch. Neither league keeps score or standings. Each team will bat around in each half inning without regard to outs made by the defense. These levels are entirely developmental and not competitive.

Questions about level of play for T-Ball and Rookie can be directed to the VP for Developmental Baseball & Softball, Allen King ([email protected]).

General questions and issues with the registration website can be directed to the MLL registration coordinator, David Fiske ([email protected]).
